Emotional Support During Pet Relocation
The emotional connection between humans and pets is a remarkable bond that deserves nurturing and support, especially during times of relocation. By understanding the psychological impact of international relocation on our beloved animals, we can take the necessary steps to ensure their emotional well-being remains intact.
Relocating to a new country can be an exciting but equally challenging experience for humans and their beloved pets alike. As a veterinarian experienced in international pet relocation, I have witnessed firsthand the deep emotional bond between humans and their furry companions and have experienced it myself.
Understanding the Human-Pet Bond:
The bond between humans and their pets is nothing short of extraordinary. It transcends language and culture, offering unconditional love, companionship, and emotional support. Pets become integral members of our families, and their well-being is of utmost importance.
Recognising the Emotional Impact:
Just like humans, pets can experience a wide range of emotions when facing relocation. They may sense changes in their environment, routines, and the emotional state of their owners. Common emotional reactions in pets include anxiety, fear, and confusion. It is essential for pet owners to be sensitive to these emotions and take appropriate measures to provide comfort and support during this transition.
Preparation is Key:
When planning an international relocation, I’m involved and if necessary, will communicate with your primary care veterinarian early on. My relocation consultants will assist booking my services for necessary vaccinations, blood tests, health certifications, and it is quite often during this time I will get to meet you and your pet and offer my professional guidance.
Additionally, my team are experienced in providing advice on suitable travel crates, comfort items, and the importance of maintaining familiar scents and comforting toys throughout the journey. My team are regularly updated with animal behaviour and veterinary perspectives for international relocation, and I have great confidence in the support my experienced team can offer.
Creating a Familiar Environment:
Before the actual relocation, we will help you to start preparing your pets for the upcoming journey and changes that travel will bring. Maintain your pet's daily routine as much as possible and provide a space that is like their new environment. Familiarise them with their travel crate and create positive associations by offering treats and praise. Gradual exposure to different stimuli, such as car rides or aircraft audio sounds, can help reduce anxiety during travel. My team and myself will support you with all the information you need for this preparation and can answer all your questions.
Supporting Pets During Travel:
During the journey, we will ensure your pets have access to fresh water, super absorbent bedding to keep them comfortable and dry. The bedding used is not only highly absorb and it is cushioned to avoid pressure areas rubbing during a long flight, allowing comfortable rest. Acclimate them to flying-like conditions by simulating these experiences, allowing your pets to adjust to the sounds and sensations associated with air travel.
We may discuss the use of natural calming products, or I may consult with you, about anxiety-relieving prescription medications, if appropriate or necessary.
Ease into the New Environment:
Upon arrival to your new destination, make your pet's transition as smooth as possible. Maintain their routines, such as feeding and exercise times. Familiarise them with their new surroundings gradually, allowing them to explore at their own pace. Ensure they have a safe space, complete with familiar scents and comforting toys, to retreat to when feeling overwhelmed.
